About this article

This year, Korean Diabetes Association (KDA) celebrates its 52nd anniversary. The official journal of the KDA, Diabetes & Metabolism Journal (DMJ), was initially titled Diabetes in 1972 but underwent a name change to Korean Diabetes Journal in 2008, aiming for recognition as an international academic publication. The current title was assumed after being indexed in PubMed Central in 2011. Listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) in 2017, DMJ had an impact factor of 5.9 in 2022, placing it 30th among 145 endocrinology and metabolism journals worldwide, which is in the top 20%.

DMJ publishes six times annually, featuring around 70 papers, including both reviews and original articles. In 2023, our journal received a total of 469 submissions from 55 countries globally, with an acceptance rate of approximately 15%. DMJ boasts a team of 22 associate editors along with renowned scholars from around the world who serve as international editorial board members and journal reviewers.

In 2024, our goal is to further enhance our journal’s value by upholding the esteemed reputation that we have cultivated. To achieve this, we will refine the overall submission process, including optimizing our website to provide researchers with a more convenient method to submit papers. We also aim to shorten the time it takes from paper submission to a final decision, as well as from acceptance to publication, as much as possible. To this end, we are considering increasing the total number of published papers if necessary. Furthermore, we are seeking ways to make DMJ’s review process more transparent and therefore broaden participation. We believe this will create an environment where the many distinguished researchers who serve as reviewers can conduct reviews more comfortably and feel proud of their contributions to DMJ. Additionally, by further promoting the use of graphical abstracts and introducing paper highlights, we aim to establish a virtuous cycle in which readers can readily access papers and thus elevate the overall quality of our journal.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to and respect for the former editors-in-chief (Hyun Shik Son, Sei Hyun Baik, Kyong Soo Park, Kyu Chang Won, In-Kyung Jeong, and Kyung Mook Choi) for their devotion to DMJ. In particular, Professor Kyung Mook Choi, the immediate past executive director, made a significant contribution of raising the impact factor by improving the submission and review processes over the last 2 years. Our heartfelt thanks also go to Professor Kyoil Seo, who was the former president of the KDA, and Kyu Chang Won, the former chairman and member of the board of directors. Furthermore, we express our deep appreciation to Professor Huh Sun, who served as DMJ’s honorary editor since 2010 and provided invaluable guidance and support for DMJ, allowing it to be listed in the SCIE and subsequently established as a Q1 journal. We would also like to thank the executive editors, managing editors, honorary editors, international editorial board members, statistical advisors, and manuscript editors, both former and current, for their unwavering commitment and dedication. Last but not least, our condolences go to the friends and family of Professor Daisuke Koya, an esteemed member of the international editorial board in 2022 to 2023, who recently passed away. May he rest in peace.

Many scientific and medical papers are being published aroundIL the world. However, issues related to predatory academic journals and the use of artificial intelligence in various stages of paper publishing, from manuscript creation to peer review, are emerging. We will continue to strive to enhance the value of DMJ by effectively adapting to these changes in the publishing environment. We look forward to your continued support and interest in DMJ.
